The main event in the life of the society each year is the annual conference, held each September. The conference includes plenary papers from international experts in the field. There are also short papers and discussion groups, and morning and evening prayer. The weekend aims to be marked by collegiality and new friendships, with numerous opportunities for relaxed discussions amidst drinks receptions, pleasant surroundings, and good food. On Saturday evening there is a formal conference dinner, after which a notable public figure addresses the society on its given topic from the perspectives of civic life. Most recently, former Labour MP and Cabinet Minister Tony Benn addressed the topic of managerialism in 2007, and in 2008 the Rt Hon John Battle MP, formerly faith advisor to Tony Blair, reflected on the place of the religion in modern political life. The 2010 keynote speaker was Professor Lord Anthony Giddens, who addressed the politics of climate change.
