2017 Spring Postgraduate Conference, Life to the full: Human (and other) flourishing

Registration is closed for this event
In John’s Gospel Jesus says ‘I have come that they may have life and have it to the full’ (John 10:10). The term ‘human flourishing’, or eudaimonism in the thought of Augustine, has often been used to refer to this ‘fullness of life’. Our 2017 Postgraduate conference will consider the far-reaching consequences of this idea for theology and especially for theological ethics. What does, or should, human flourishing look like? What does flourishing mean for the non-human? Is human flourishing a viable or helpful goal of theology and ethics? We’re seeking papers which address such questions and issues related to them. We would particularly welcome papers considering human flourishing from the following perspectives:
  • Ecological ethics
  • Bioethics
  • Disability theology
  • Sexual ethics
  • Socio-economic ethics
  • Political ethics
  • Contemporary culture - Social media, “fake news”, and post-truth ethics
  • Notions of human flourishing elsewhere in historical and/or contemporary thought

Our plenary speaker Prof. Peter Scott (Manchester) will give a plenary address with a response offered by Dr. Scott Midson (Manchester).

The two days will also feature a diverse selection of postgraduate papers surrounding our theme.
